How Did He Lie To Us?
When specifically asked by both the Greater Vancouver Homebuilders Association and B.C.’s Restaurant and Food Services Association if they were thinking about the HST, the Liberals sent both organizations identical letters stating: “A harmonized goods and services tax is not something that is contemplated in the B.C. Liberal election platform.” Not only that, but he also stated that should his government decide to implement this tax, they would consult with industry before doing so. Now, mere months after the election, he has broken those promises. These are only just a couple of the reasons why this new tax should be revoked and is unfair.
How is it possible for a government, in about 3 months, to go from HST not being contemplated, to an announcement of HST? Surely it must take more than 3 months of planning to bring in a new tax? Would that not therefore mean that the Liberals made a bold faced LIE during the election camping saying there were no plans to implement HST? The only reason for this would be because they knew the backlash that would result from the new tax. They wanted to get re-elected, so they kept it quiet until they were voted in again.
It is now apparent, with the printing of this article, the Gordon Campbell knew of the plans to implement HST a full 5 months before the election! Why then do both Gordon Campbell and Colin Hansen say that they had no plans to implement HST until after the election? The facts don’t lie, and their story just doesn’t add up.
Not only that, but it was announced on the same day as the much anticipated results of the Braidwood inquiry into taser use as a result of the incident at the Vancouver International Airport between the RCMP and Robert Dziekanski. Why announce it on the same day? To make sure that the impact of the announcement would be lessened, and that the public reaction would be less than if it were announced on any other day.
