The B.C. government has released a list of items that will be taxed under the new Harmonized Sales Tax, after weeks of pressure from critics of the HST.
The tax, which blends the federal Goods and Services Tax with B.C.’s provincial sales tax, comes fully into effect in July. Some items became subject to the tax May 1.
It will be applied to everything from children’s clothes and haircuts to funeral services and movie and theatre tickets to professional sporting events, none of which was subject to the PST before.
The tax on alcoholic beverages will drop by three per cent because a special 10 per cent provincial tax drops to seven per cent in the shift to the HST.
A petition under B.C.’s Recall and Initiatives Act is underway, in which organizers hope to collect enough signatures to force a referendum on the HST law. Canvassers have until July 5 to sign up 10 per cent of the voters in each of the province’s 85 ridings.
A petition organizer had been critical of the province’s apparent reluctance to provide details, but now says the release of the list will help his cause.
“I expect we’ll get a lot more signatures now,” Chris Delaney said Friday. “As people see the actual impact of it and they realize how much it’s going to cost them, they’re going to realize it’s worse than they thought.”
B.C. Finance Minister Colin Hansen has accused Delaney’s campaign of providing an incorrect list of what will be affected under the HST.
But Delaney said the list was incorrect only because the province had previously not provided specifics on how the HST would be applied.

I just had a chance to read the governments propaganda, take out the trash, late Friday press conference on the items we will and will not be paying the HST on.
What a crock of you know what, as usual thanks for screwing it to the hard working, average Joe working stiff, homeowners of the province.
It’s about time government starts taxing businesses and corporations more.
Average Joe is finding it more difficult to live in this province thanks to Gordon Campbell and the B.C. Lieberals. Since coming into government, minimum wage has been stuck at 6 bucks, after 500 hours it goes up to $8…WOW.
Remember B.C. stands for one thing…BRING CASH.
TIME TO TURF THESE BOZO’S OUT OF OFFICE
The HST is not nearly as bad as the opponents make it out to be… the increase in employment in this province is more than worth it!
How on earth is a new tax going to increase employment? More welfare & EI workers for the newly unemployed when people increase spending across the east & south borders??? Good grief… Gandolf must be a party candidate.

where exactly can I sighn the official petition to scrap the HST ?
I fully support this anti – HST campaign
The HST means an extra 7% on all services… This has already created a visible Black market or under the table condition (Cash work) for service business out there. No HST means no 7% when you need service provided to the home owner or business.
SAY NO TO THE HST!
Oh! a ten 10% reduced HST would still be 5% extra on everything in which PST was excluded…
